CHAPTER ELEVEN
Not even the radio in the vehicle provided us with an escape.
â...Many citizens of the Second Corner have gone missing since the recent release of the former king. Some of King Luciferâs followers have taken to the crime he was accused of in order to upset the new queenâs reign. Some experts sayâ¦â
âLetâs turn this off for now, hmm?â Lucifer suggested.
âThis is about our case, you know.â
âI canât listen to this.â We were on our way to Luciferâs former home, and the news station played on the radio and on our minds.
â...Believes that the former king is to blame for the activities, and his capture has been encouragedâ¦â
âWill you be safe if you go there?â I asked.
âProbably not,â he responded. âUnless I make up a fake identity.â
âSounds like a good plan.â I looked over at Lucifer. Worry nearly paralyzed him. âIs everything all right?â
âI didnât kidnap her, yet I know they all still think that I did. She just showed up, and she couldâve left any day she wanted to.â
âPeople will believe anything. Do you remember how in that old book that was on the shelf in the room you let me stay in, the characters were told that this particular one ruined all this stuff that they were doing, even though it was practically impossible?â
âI didnât know that you read that book.â
âI read it to the child of my former boss once. It was a decent story, really. The movie ruined it, Iâve heard. What Iâm saying is that youâre like that, in a sense.â
âIâve never thought about it in that way,â he admitted.
âThatâs why Iâm here, isnât it?â I turned off the radio as the announcer began explaining something relatively unimportant that was happening in the First Corner. âSo about that new identity,â I began.
âI had better choose something good, huh?â
âHereâs a challenge for you. Come up with a name that starts with the same letter as your former name did.â
I feared for a moment that he wouldnât want me bringing that up, but the light that flashed in his eyes told me that he almost wanted me to know who he had once been. Maybe he just wanted me to uncover it from a vision or something.
âStop it, Hecate. Iâm not that⦠Ugh, fine. Let me think.â Lucifer raised his head and tapped his fingers on the side of the hovercraftâs door.
âI could help if I knew what your name had been,â I sang, trying to slightly annoy Lucifer.
âI wonât tell you.â He seemed, on the outside again, quite adamant about ignoring his past. I knew he wouldnât tell me, but it was amusing to see his reactions.
âWeâre almost there. Better think of something soon,â I reminded him.
âAll right, Iâve got it. I guess Iâll call myself Acheron. Like that mythological river, if you know what Iâm talking about.â
âWelcome to the Second Corner, Assistant Detective Acheron. Letâs try to figure out whatâs going on.â
As we stopped and exited the vehicle upon reaching our destination, I couldnât help but to feel a little bit sick or nervous.
